Nextcloud Talkon your phone.
NKS Talk is a client for Nextcloud Talk. You connect your own Nextcloud server – the one you trust – and chat from Android, iPhone, Mac and Windows. No third-party message storage in between.
Your server, your messages
Most chat apps park you on somebody else's server. NKS Talk turns that around: you enter the server address, and messages, attachments and conversations stay wherever your Nextcloud put them.

Your own server
You connect to your Nextcloud. The app publisher runs no message storage and has no access to their content.

Several accounts at once
Work and personal Nextcloud side by side, on different servers if you like. Account data stays separated.

No advertising
No ads, no in-app purchases, no selling of data. The app does the one thing you installed it for.
What the app does
A complete chat for everyday use – from threads and reactions to conversation management and link guests.
- Chat without compromise
- Threads, replies, reactions, editing and deleting messages, mentions and emoji. Read state and participant availability show right in the conversation.
- Attachments and voice messages
- Images, video, files and voice messages. Giphy is on hand when things need lightening up.
- Search
- Across every conversation or inside a single one. You will find an old message even when you only remember one word.
- Conversation management
- Renaming, description, picture, labels, favourites, message expiration, lobby, read-only mode and participant management.
- Guests with a link
- Open a conversation with a link, password-protected if you want. History can be cleared, the conversation left or deleted.
- Works offline too
- Conversations are cached and sending is held by a resilient queue – a message written on the underground goes out as soon as there is signal.
Alerts arrive even when the app is closed
You can close the app completely. Notifications travel through our own nks-talk-notify proxy, which passes them on to Firebase Cloud Messaging on Android and to the Apple Push Notification service on Apple devices.
- The proxy cannot read notification content. It is encrypted with the device public key and only the private key on your phone opens it.
- You can reply straight from a notification or mark a message read – without opening the app.
- A tap opens exactly the account and the conversation the alert came from.
- On Android you can use Web Push via UnifiedPush instead of Firebase and pick your own distributor.
Privacy and security
Less data in transit means fewer worries. Here is what is stored where.
Password in the system vault
You sign in through Login Flow v2, so you never type your account password into the app. The generated app password sits in Android Keystore or Apple Keychain.
Notifications only for you
The proxy only knows your device identifier and the push provider token. The message content is decrypted by the phone.
Messages stay home
Conversations and attachments stay on your Nextcloud. The app only keeps a cache on your device.
Download
The app is at version 0.1.0 and currently runs in closed testing. Tester links are being prepared – they will appear here as soon as they exist.
